Because I had decided that I preferred to give up the advantages of having swap 
than wasting the time required to get encrypted swap + hibernation to work. : )

I see. Perhaps others would also find it useful, as seems to be tradition in so 
much free software : ), to allow users to force upower to report a certain 
value when they are sure of what they are doing. Especially because upower now 
plays such a central role in providing info for power applets, 
gnome-power-manager, etc.
