Dear Richard Hughes, I'm regret that I am not actually a developer, merely an interested user. I do not posses the coding skills required to create a patch. At an architectural level, I can only suggest that one way to reduce the amount written to disk would be to add another column internally for that data - if it had yet been written to disk. Then only new, unwritten data could be appended to the files.
