Ok, I listened to the rather interesting discussion about the illicit
content problem.
What I plan to do first of all is add a disclaimer in which I deny any
warranties of noninfringement and of fitness for any purpose in general (the
text is copied&adapted from another search engine site...). It will also
state that I am not responsible for the content of any files listed in the
directory.
I am not sure if this will help me in the case of downright illegal content.
I guess the least thing I am forced to do is remove content when I am
notified of its illegality. I don't think it will help me if I argue that
the index is generated by automated processes.
Concerning the porn filter:
I checked a few search engines and neither of them filters porn. You have to
search for it explicitely, sure, but then they'll give it to you. Also,
neither of them has a warning message along the lines of "You might
encounter sexually explicit pictures or descriptions on the following pages,
do you want to continue?".
The only place on the freegle site where you are presented lists of keys
without having entered a keyword is the "Latest Additions" page. That page
contains quite some porn stuff.
When you search for something specific (such as "Douglas"), the chance
you'll find porn is very slim. When you search for very generic terms like
".jpg", you have to expect that you'll be presented images of just about any
kind - including porn.
So I don't really see the point in filtering porn (or any other category
somebody may find offensive, as Michael pointed out). I'd rather just drop
the Latest Additions page.
A solution I could accept that goes in the direction of filtering is to
store a "bad word list" as a cookie. This could be preset to
porn/fuck/blowjob for heaven's sake, but can be changed at will by every
user (or emptied out).
The in-Freenet search page will have no filtering at all (cookies aren't
appriopriate for free sites).
Actually, my position is that I want to allow any legal content and, if
necessary, delete illegal content just keep myself out of trouble.
