Another solution would be to have files compressed and decompressed
purely by clients, and have whether a file is compressed or not marked
in the file's metadata.

anarchists.  At this rate, anarchist social revolution must not be
that far off. :)

On the other hand, I hate Leon Trotsky.  That guy had the Cheka shoot
a whole bunch of anarchists during the Russian Revolution, and he was
personally the Butcher of Kronstadt.
