We (actually, Brandon and I for the most part (even though I haven't
done too much work lately)) have done a moderate deal of work on
something called freenet-news, which is essentially Usenet over
Freenet, without any XML or such. It can even be used with a normal
news client, for it uses an NNTP gateway in normal use.
