can anyone figure out how to disable the JIT compiling in IBM's java?
we should find out if leaving the code alone and turning off JIT also
disappears the problem.  i suspect it will since the fact that it
doesn't show up until the node has run for hours suggests it happens
whenever the JVM decides to JIT-compile that part of the code.
