If you want to go perl, you even have two perl FCP libraries to choose
from.  It's not packaged, but in liberator's CVS
(http://sf.net/projects/liberator), there's a perl FCP library, along
with a client implementation and a fcp -> FCP2 proxy that handles
metadata, etc. for any program that supports FCP.
