I wouldn't say it is necessarily a requirement, however I think that assuming a single area of specialization violates what I think should be a node's intuitive contract with other nodes in the network - namely that it will endeavor to cache whatever other nodes expect it to cache (rather than trying to manipulate other nodes into perceiving it to specialize in a certain area). I know its hand-wavy, but such is the nature of emergent architectures.
