I had the same problem sending mail to another address (and also to this
list!). It seems that hawk looks-up the IP address of the sender smtp server
on osirusoft's (they host a couple of spam-related databases) open relay
database and finds it. Our server happened to be open (and hijacked!) for a
while, and these systems (another is www.ordb.org) caught on with this. The
catch is that they don't periodically re-test whether an smtp server has
closed-up. I had to go to the relevant sites and submit our server for
testing. I started from ordb and found out about the rest (it has links).

Oh, the hint is the 554 message line, if you are observant enough...
