My (somewhat old) mplayer CVS checkout has a DOCS subdirectory, in
which I can find the following information:

Q: There are error messages about file not found

/usr/lib/win32/
...

A: Download the
    <A HREF="ftp://ftp.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/w32codec-0.90.tar.bz2";>Win32
codecs
from our FTP site (avifile's codec package has a different DLL set)
    and install it.

As for legality... well, this is a *Freenet* development list, isn't
it? ;-)
