Yes. It's not needed.
Your idea would work. However, I think it would be better to do something like
this:
index.html CHK preload=image1.png,image2.png
image1.png CHK
image2.png CHK
page2.html CHK preload=bigimage.jpg
bigimage.jpg CHK
download.zip CHK
