The reminds me of the "Freegle" that appeared a few years ago. (Nothing to do with google. Really. Think of Freenet, Think of an Eagle. <smirks>
There was a java applet, which contained an index of Freenet pages, and you could search through it. To ensure that it wasn't compromising your anonymity, the source code was offered, so you could download and check the source, then compile it yourself. The site was also co-released on the web.
