It seems that I'm getting an update-your-node notice once a week or
so. This is very frequent. I can choose to ignore them for a while,

it too long I get that message about being left behind. What kind of
updates are these?

Some changes are surely just features or UI stuff. Some changes
necessarily require everyone to update for them to be effective, being
a distributed network. But those don't have to be pushed out quite so
often.

Critical updates, on the other hand, should be pushed out right away.
Are there critical updates every week? Is Freenet that risky, that
critical updates are being identified so often?

I would prefer more stability.

Freenet is in active development. If you look at the log messages they state that quite clearly, open wrapper.log and search for "this version of Freenet".

Also if you read this list there are updates about why the new updates are put out, there are also announcements to that fact on Frost's [freenet] board (thanks to some person mirroring them) (if you are using some other message system, there may well be those announcements there also, but i'm not sure about that).

Stability is good, but would you rather have a buggy insecure node?
