OK, that's good to hear.  I'll leave it alone unless someone actually
complains, especially now that Theodore Hong has explained why I should
keep my cotton-pickin' hands off of it..

I've committed a variety of other changes so that the scripts only
rely on what I perceive to be pretty standard features of /bin/sh and
/bin/test; bash is now no longer a requirement for the scripts.  As far
as I can determine, they're portable, but I won't be convinced until
someone manages to run it on one of those accursed SCO boxes...
