wrt the discussion over the serialization format.... I would suggest that the serialization format is not as important as the ability to recover the list of keys and files from scratch; without the serialized file at all.
For example, in my datastore I have several files with names like t8721594, but there is no simple way to determine the key that names this file. If there were, then it wouldn't really be that important if the serialization format changed -- all I would lose is knowledge of the queue order, source nodes, etc. But none of that is essential as far as I know. Am I overlooking something?
