As far as I know, the server is unaware that a given document 
is one part of a multi-part (within the context of the current 
discussion) document.  Automatic splitting and merging of 
multi-part files could be handled on the client side, however, 
presumably by putting some sort of keyword into the metadata.

To my knowledge, automatic multi-part downloading and merging 
have not been written into the reference client.  I'm pretty 
sure Steve Blackheath is the guy with the final word on that.  
It seems like a low-priority item right now; but if you've the 
skills, time, and inclination to write the code yourself, so 
much the better.
