All these talk of multicasting jogged my memory and what popped out was
this article appearing on DDJ #312, May 2K, "Scalable Multicasting File
Distribution".
Sounds familiar?

No doubt this was written by a researcher in MS (horrors!:), but was
done
quite professionally. There are code available but... in C/C++.
