Having a subtly typed protocol would solve this, such as a java
serialization protocol I wrote last year called Opossum:

Integers:
<int> OR 0x<hex int>
Floating point:
<float>
Booleans:
yes OR no

where the fields in brackets are what you would normally expect, ie 3, 5.1
or fe1ba856c
