Pardon me, I may be completely incorrect, and I don't know the effect that this would have upon the entire network, but what if you changed "routeConnectTimeout=10000" in the freenet.ini file to a larger number? Maybe 30000? Also I think maxNodeConnections=30 is too high. Too many connection can cause all connections to fail sporatically because node is too busy or cablemodem maxed out. I am using a cablemodem and I have my node set to 16, I kept the maximumConnectionThreads=16 "routeConnectTimeout=30000" seemed to be the variable that helps most.
I just experimented with this between my node and the node on hawk.freenetproject.org I was able to improve the "Connection Attempts" to "Successful Connections" RATIO of my node in Hawk's ref table from 1 success / 4 attempts TO 9 success / 10 attempts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I used 30000 as the value. This also immediately raised my node's CP on Hawk from 0.11 to .92 !!! I tried this for several minutes (several hundred connection attempts) requesting various keys and freesites, most of which were not in Hawk's datastore. Will someone more knowledgable look this idea over, and reply with why or why wouldn't this help?
