You don't need Gnome or KDE to use X on Linux. For example, when I do
use X (which is actually somewhat rare for me, because I usually use
the console for everything other than looking at images), I use fvwm2,
which is FAR lighter than Gnome or KDE (my linux distro, LinuxPPC,
came with both Gnome or KDE, but I disabled them along with gdm
because they use lots of processor time that could be devoted to other
things and X by itself, even if it just sits there doing nothing,
still unnecessarily uses processor time). And what you said about
XEmacs, Netscape, and StarOffice: those are probably some of the
largest and most bloated software for Linux, so your comparison here
is false. I use GNU Emacs, lynx and mutt for the purposes that those
three programs serve and it's REALLY FAST (and this is on my old, slow
180MHz PPC604e box - switching from fragile old MacOS to Linux made
the operation of my box MUCH faster (I've noticed that booting
winblows on the machines at my school, which are generally faster than
my home machine, is MUCH slower than booting my home machine)). In
addition, I have to note that Winblows actually preloads certain
programs, such as Internet Explorer, creating a false impression of
speed.
