I would like to encourage those still using the Makefile and "make" to switch to Ant (downloadable from http://jakarta.apache.org/ant/), as it is a pain to have to update both Makefile and build.xml when modifications are made, and Ant is more powerful, and easier to use than make.
Some advice though, I have had little luck with installing either Ant's .deb or .rpm packages, I suggest Linux users download the binary tarball, put it somewhere like /opt/ant, and add "/opt/ant/bin" to your $PATH. Note that Ant requires Java v1.1 or later.
