Javascript will only be needed to get your progress bar to pop-up in 
another Window, but without it, we can still have it just appear in an 
ordinary browser window.

This is easy, in fact, Bombe has already done something similar with the 
load indicator on the Freenet gateway page.

It could be achieved using a Java Applet, but I don't think that is 
necessary and it would create all-sorts of cross-browser compatability 
issues.
