OK. I've found versions at http://freenetproject.org/cgi-bin/twiki/view/Pub/MetadataSpec, http://freenetproject.org/doc/metadataspec.html and http://freenetproject.org/doc/book.html which seem to contradict each other in various ways, and none includes the recently discussed change about the way unknown documents within a freesite are handled.
