We should look at/collect statistics on the success of retries and such-like, this will improve our understanding of what HTLs are good, and what retry strategies work. What about some kind of "download manager" - users may not want to dedicate an entire browser window to the download. Downloads could be queued, or retrieved concurrently. And finally, a simple practical suggestion - the page title should indicate download % and ETA so that the user can monitor progress when the window is minimized.
