It will work fine, it's just that you're not contributing to the
network, and if your friends are traitors then they can attack you
somewhat more easily.

It is quite okay to only connect your friends to you to start with.
Hopefully the network will grow later on as more people get Freenet. The
amount of load they can put on the network is severely limited by them
going through you, so it's not a big deal from that perspective. :)
