1. Most people who reach the downloads page apparently don't download
the installer.
- Is there a technical problem?
- Is it simply that the installer is cached by web proxies?

2. A lot of people are downloading Freenet 0.7

3. Very few of them are seeking references on #freenet-refs.
- Link to some IRC clients? Many people don't know what IRC is!
- Opennet?
- Alternate forums for getting references (i.e. fake opennet).

[16:13] <nextgens> Whah!
[16:13] <nextgens> unbelivable
[16:13] <nextgens> something must be wrong
[16:13] <nextgens> grep selfextractpack.jar access.log |cut -d- -f

[16:13] <nextgens> 109
[16:13] <nextgens> from 29/Jun/2006:00:00:01 to 29/Jun/2006:15:12:03
[16:14] <nextgens> meaning that 109 people have tried to start the
installer in less than 15hours
[16:14] <nextgens> ...
[16:14] <nextgens> something *is* seriously wrong
[16:15] <nextgens> I doubt that most of them have succeed installing it
[16:15] <nextgens> the network isn't expanding that fast
[16:15] <nextgens> or they are very quiet
[16:15] * nextgens asks google how many hits it has counted today
[16:16] <DukeThor_> I just installed about 15 minutes ago. It took a
little while, but it eventually installed.
[16:16] <nextgens> we had 549 people on /downloads.php today
[16:17] <nextgens> it's possible that 1/5 of them have clicked on the
installation link
[16:17] <nextgens> DukeThor_: do you have any suggestion on how to
improve the install process ?
[16:17] * nextgens thinks he should do a survey
[16:19] <DukeThor_> Me, no.
[16:19] <nextgens> when you say it took a little while, what did ?
[16:20] <nextgens> the installer itself ?
[16:20] <nextgens> you figuring out what to do ?
[16:20] <nextgens> the speed of our mirrors ?
[16:20] * nextgens is working on the "next generation" of the installer,
that's why I'm a bit curious
[16:21] <DukeThor_> Yeah. it seemed to hang occasionally. Could've
been the mirrors, but also could've been my connection.
[[16:24] <DukeThor_> If there is any sort of "problem", I'd guess it's
adding nodes.
[16:25] <nextgens> you think the current procedure it to complex ?
[16:26] <nextgens> what matters ? finding your node's reference ?
[16:26] <nextgens> finding people to connect to ?
[16:26] <nextgens> exchanging the reference itself ?
[16:26] <DukeThor_> Finding people to connect to.
[16:27] <nextgens> ^-^
[16:27] <nextgens> unfortunatly we aren't planning to simplify that part
for now
[16:28] <DukeThor_> Finding your own reference and the actual exchange
is fine, once you actually RTFM :) , it's just a matter of finding
someone you "trust"
[16:29] <nextgens> well, if we were simplifying that part, your node
would find and choose trusted people on its own ...
[16:29] <nextgens> I'm not sure that it's better ;)
[16:29] <DukeThor_> Personally, there is only one other person that
would use this that I personally know and trust, and that person is on
vacation ATM.
[16:30] <nextgens> the important part is to know what for you"re
trusting people/your links
[16:30] <nextgens> if you trust them not to be a government/bad guys
that's often enough
[16:31] <nextgens> you're free to decide what trust level you require
for peers willing to connect to your node
[16:34] <DukeThor_> Ok. The next issue is finding those people. The
refs channel is quiet.
[16:36] <nextgens> the problem is probably that most people in there
already have enough references and aren't actively searching for new
ones
[16:36] <nextgens> DukeThor_: do you have one to start with ?
[16:37] <DukeThor_> I have one right now. Looks like someone new.
[17:42] <Tritman> nextgens, I observed your discussion a few moments ago
with DukeThor_ concerning the stats of googleanalytics
[17:42] <Tritman> on the download page of freenet. You've seens 500
connection today, 119 download but
[17:42] <Tritman> it seems there is less nodes created. In my opinion, I
think that the problem is :
[17:43] <Tritman> - all the 'newbies' do not know IRC, it would be
interesting to have a link to mirc, chatzilla, or equivalent
[17:43] <Tritman> - when people exchanged keys, they don't know what to
do then, a link to the Frost page could be relevant to have more
explanation on the best way of using Freenet
[17:43] <Tritman> finally, and in my opinion, I find that the current
installation is correct.
[17:43] <nextgens> we need to work on easing the connection process, we
all agree on that
[17:44] <Tritman> it is my experience feedback
