I appreciate the frequent updates.  Unlike most other P2P software Freenet
passes through nodes in a chain instead of one-on-one.   This means bugs in
other nodes affect my nodes performance.   If nodes aren't forced to update
we would be unable to see the effect a code change has on the network.
Additionally, supporting old builds with a known bug that is fixed in a
later build is a waste of everyone's time.

If you choose not to update your node you will still be able to connect to
other nodes of the same age, only newer nodes won't be harmed by your
choice.

For the record, I manually update my node also.  I have to run the update
script once every week or two at the most.
