A single thread exists that wakes up at the statistic sampling interval and samples all the stats, writes them to the stat archive (if one is configured) and notifies listeners of changes (like these mbeans). I think the main body of this thread is: org.apache.geode.internal.statistics.HostStatSampler.run()
