We may also want to have a counter. Check out [`map_fn_microbenchmark.py`](https://github.com/apache/beam/blob/master/sdks/python/apache_beam/tools/map_fn_microbenchmark.py). This one does not include counters but it does show a basic snapshot of the sort of test we're looking for. Probably synthetic step is not necessary here, though I'm not sure. wdyt?
