the host file specifies the ip addresses for the various components; if you're going to do deploy a component explicitly and without using the playbooks, then you'll know the ip address first.
the playbooks will deploy the component to the specified ip address in the host file. i thought - as i understood it - that you deployed couchdb separately (ie you didn't run the couchdb.yml playbook); is that a correct understanding?
