I was a little torn on this. We have a bad habit of misusing sentinel values internally. For example, see https://github.com/apache/kafka/commit/a5318722c74ec0279a2e831e93e4164d9adcb8a1#diff-25ea40d139b41c948888c2a4f13c9e82. One option might be to drop this API and instead expose a method for the fencing check. Alternatively we can return the raw type and just try to be careful using it.
