I am concerned with pulling these locking and cleanup PRs (there have been a bunch now) into the 8.0.0 release. @zwoop and I have been running 8.0.0 is production without any issues and it looks like these PRs would make the release less stable. I am also concerned that many of the PRs are reviewed by only one person.
