I'm going to spend about another full day on this to get things into merge-ready shape, and run some simple performance benchmarks. Can someone have a glance at the public API and see if anything looks weird or confusing so we can merge this soon? There is a ton of follow up work to do, and many aspects of this should be regarded as preliminary.
