It's not easy to compare, as they vary quite a bit from run to run. In the 
logs, one can see that there are 50 to 100 less compilation steps in each cmake 
pass, which _should_ translate into faster builds on average.

(ultimately, I think it would be nice for this to work on Unix too, as it would 
shrink the size of test executables, but there are probably major hurdles to 
overcome)
