I think this is a UI problem, meaning that Administration link in the upper right corner always goes to global administration and not to space administration. Try http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/admin/XYZSpace/WebPreferences?editor=spacerights&global=1&space=XYZSpace for example (simply change /XWiki/XWikiPreferences in /XYZSpace/WebPreferences), are you able to edit rights ? > So..
