What about adding an Avatar in "created by" and "updated by" sections on the page. An alternative could be to have and AJAX popup that shows a VCard everytime there is a link.
Curriki has these VCards for pages (not users) (hover on page links in the Table of Content on this page http://www.curriki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Coll_LudovicDubost/XWikiUserTraining) In Curriki it's not AJAX based (which means fast but heavy in HTML in the page).
