Vincent, I'll go with the option of running in a Ubuntu virtual machine under VirtualBox. I think that's cleaner than cygwin. Thanks for everyone's help. I'll be back after I get the new environment set up.

It's a problem of max path size on Windows. What you can do is use cygwin and build from it, it should support long path names. As Sergiu mentioned we know about this issue but we've been lazy and haven't fixed it. Our bad.
