Hello,
It's definitely possible to build a social networking site with XWiki.
Checkout for example http://winesphere.net/ which is built on top of
XWiki and has social features such as activity streams,
followers/following etc.
You might also be interested by
http://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Extension/Social+Login+Application,
that enables "social" authentication (from FB, twitter, etc.) in XWiki.
