Hi Paul, I remember that back in the summer of 2010 some XWiki developers looked at integrating a XMPP server with XWiki. If I remember correctly, a LDAP server was used for user management and both the XMPP server and the wiki were plugged into it.
There was a small chat box popping up in wiki pages as well as a list of connected users from which one could initiate conversations. It was very experimental, worked fine for about 15 users but I have no idea about scaling.
