It is based on the parent-child page system, but pages/categories thus created also contains an object marking them as part of a special hierarchy, so it's a bit stronger than just the parent-child relation. This extension also provides some livetables to see each sub-category of a given category. So, it's nothing revolutionary, it just makes it easier to create special hierarchies.
