As I suspected, Eric, and this confirms a message I sent to Jim Deacon about a week ago concerning claims by a recently fired USGS employee that appeared in the Las Vegas Sun that pollutants being released into Las Vegas Wash were negatively impacting fishes in Lake Mead and could pose problems to human health in that area. An Atlanta-based publisher of what appears to be the major newspaper in Las Vegas is really bad news. If the "Sun" goes down, the Atlanta-based conservatives will be in charge of news in that area. Damn!

To all,
Relative to Nathan's current post & just so you all know...
The Las Vegas Sun used to be a completely independent paper that actually
competed with the Las Vegas Review-Journal. In general, it provided
positive press favorable to environmental & conservation issues (as opposed
to its rival). It is/was a home-grown publication owned by people who lived
right here in southern NV. However, the paper was not able to compete with
the RJ in terms of circulation. The RJ, BTW, is just cog in an economically
powerful, politically conservative, publishing conglomerate based in
Atlanta, GA. It has NO grass-roots ties to NV or the issues that involve
us. Currently, the Sun has a small, semi-separate staff that works WITHIN
the RJ "house" and their "paper" is actually printed on the RJ presses. The
Sun only appears as a Sunday supplement within the RJ parent paper.
According to people I know (a former Sun editor was an acquaintance of my
dad via a WWII veteran's organization) the Sun "stepchild" will eventually
cease to exist altogether.
That being said, it is refreshing that the Sun can still provide some
positive press regarding the DHP here in this increasingly
anti-environmental publishing environment.

Just an FYI, apparently another paper in Vegas (Sun) had better coverage of
the issues at Devil's Hole. See the link below for a reasonable article on
the topic. Hopefully more people read this one.

Also I got a response from a FWS person (and DFC member) in Vegas to
yesterday's posting and she PROMISED an update soon for the DFC-L on the
very latest situation at Devil's Hole.
Appreciate the positive responses I got from the letter; I passed them on to
Chuck, where the credit was due. BTW, we're working on a "what's up at DFC"
update to come out soon - I know you can't wait!
Good day all, Nathan
