Hello All, We are currently advertising for a Biological Science Technician (Fisheries) position at Death Valley National Park. The Devils Hole pupfish was one of the first species listed as Endangered under Federal law, largely in response to groundwater withdrawals from the area surrounding Devils Hole. The population rebounded from this initial threat, but starting in roughly 1995, the single wild population of this species again started to decline. Unlike the initial decline, the cause of the current decline has been elusive. As one step towards understanding the causal factors that may have precipitated the observed decline, the National Park Service and its cooperators recently convened an interdisciplinary panel of experts to consider monitoring approaches for this unique ecosystem. This position will be focussed on implementation of the resulting ecosystem monitoring strategy at Devils Hole in collaboration with the Park Fishery Biologist, Hydrologist, and Resource Managers as well as cooperators from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Nevada Department of Wildlife. Specific tasks will include sampling of abiotic and biotic features of Devils Hole, management of current datasets, and compilation of historic monitoring data. Additional duties will include monitoring of Devils Hole pupfish refuge habitats and participation in diverse collaborative recovery efforts at a suite of facilities including the Hoover Dam pupfish refuge, Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, Shark Reef Aquarium, and Willow Beach National Fish Hatchery.
This is a full-time term position that could be extended for up to four years after an initial one-year appointment. The position is being advertised at the GS 5/6/7 level.
