Correcting One's Shortcomings

"To err is human." Faults are our shortcomings. As the saying goes, "The greatest virtue is to be able to correct our mistakes."

Our parents have been correcting our shortcomings since we were young. We were taught to be tidy, to hold our chopsticks correctly, and to get up promptly in the morning. Do not overeat, do not tell lies, do not be naughty, etc. Similarly, our teachers in school told us to speak gently, to walk properly, and not to fight or make trouble. At work, our superiors also correct our faults, be it to write better memos, to speak better to customers, to deal more effectively with different levels of coworkers, or to handle affairs better. All in all, the foundation of life lies in correcting our shortcomings.

Benjamin Franklin indicated that he spent his lifetime correcting his faults and improving policies for the country. In his youth, he was considered an unruly person. He was awakened to this reality one day and realized that such a person would never succeed in life. So he decided to eradicate all the flaws in his character. He proceeded to list all his bad habits and undesirable traits on the wall. For instance, he wrote that he was argumentative, impolite, tardy, impatient, stubborn, selfish, lazy, disrespectful, intolerant, calculating, etc. He vowed to correct all of these shortcomings. Every day, he reviewed his behavior and speech and compared them with the writings on the wall. Once he found them corrected, he would erase those particular faults off the wall. After a long period of time, he corrected his mistakes and succeeded in cultivating an amiable and likable personality. He was loved by the masses and eventually became a senior statesman in the United States of America.

In dealing with others and handling our affairs, if we often blame others, we should realize that the problem might actually lie with us. If we are intelligent enough, we should reflect on ourselves. We should blame ourselves the way we blame others, and forgive others the way we forgive ourselves. Someone who knows how to reflect on himself will surely be welcomed by all.

There is a saying, "It is easier to move mountains than to change one's character." However, if something is difficult, it does not mean it is impossible. If we have the resolution and courage to change, even though it may be difficult at first, no bad habits are impossible to correct. We should be brave in our resolve to correct our shortcomings; then we may eventually become a perfect person who is respected by all.
