I can't remember if you got a reply to this.   The answer is that
there's no restriction on the hostname length (well, maybe 255) but
there is a limit to how much will fit into a DHCP packet if the client
doesn't negotiate for a larger buffer, so it's possible that your
35-character hostname, combined with all the other parameters, was too
much.
