BTW, I interpret the max-message-size option as specifying the maximum
size of the datagram, not the maximum size of the message buffer, so
for ethernet you could set it to 1500 (actually, you could set it as
high as you want, in theory, but the low-level DHCP packet driver code
doesn't grok IP fragmentation.)
