Hello all...

        Just ran into a problem...

I've been running ISC dhcpd 2.0b1pl0 on several sites for a long
time on Linux systems. Several of those sites have now been upgraded to
Linux 2.2.5 and I figured it was about time to update some of the dhcp
servers as well. I updated one server on my home network to dhcpd-2.0b1pl18
and everything is working great. My laptop connects in and gets his address
and everything is right with the world.

In the process of tinkering with a variety things, like setting up
fixed addressed under dhcp, I decided to try out dhcpd-2.0b1pl23 that's
under the testing directory (so, yes, I know to expect some quirks).

        It doesn't work... :-(

On the same server system, I've got both pl18 and pl23 compiled.
If I install pl18, my laptop gets his address and everything is fat dumb
and happy. If I install pl23, the laptop fails to get his address, even
though the logs on the server indicate that it was offered.

I've gone back and forth several times between the two dhcpd
revs on the server and even rebuilt pl23 a couple of times to make sure
I didn't miss a step. It's very deterministic. pl18 works every time.
pl23 fails every time.

Here are the logs from the successful pl18:

Mar 31 15:38:50 alcove dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:60:97:8b:b8:8a via eth0
Mar 31 15:38:50 alcove dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 130.205.0.26 to 00:60:97:8b:b8:8a via eth0
Mar 31 15:38:50 alcove dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 130.205.0.26 from 00:60:97:8b:b8:8a via
eth0
Mar 31 15:38:50 alcove dhcpd: DHCPACK on 130.205.0.26 to 00:60:97:8b:b8:8a via eth0

Here are the logs from the unsuccessful pl23:

Mar 31 15:31:35 alcove dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:60:97:8b:b8:8a via eth0
Mar 31 15:31:35 alcove dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 130.205.0.26 to 00:60:97:8b:b8:8a via eth0
Mar 31 15:31:42 alcove dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:60:97:8b:b8:8a via eth0
Mar 31 15:31:42 alcove dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 130.205.0.26 to 00:60:97:8b:b8:8a via eth0
Mar 31 15:31:56 alcove dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:60:97:8b:b8:8a via eth0
Mar 31 15:31:56 alcove dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 130.205.0.26 to 00:60:97:8b:b8:8a via eth0
Mar 31 15:32:01 alcove dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:60:97:8b:b8:8a via eth0
Mar 31 15:32:01 alcove dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 130.205.0.26 to 00:60:97:8b:b8:8a via eth0

Now... Since pl18 is working, I'm not real worried. I did think
that someone might want to know that something got broken (or at least
significantly twisted) somewhere between pl18 and pl23 before it gets out
into a release.

Is there anything else I can do to help diagnose the problem (assuming
that it is something worth investigating)?

        Mike
