There is a free web based GIS tool called MapShaper which has the ability to make borders less detailed by removing "unnecessary" vertices in shapefiles. It only takes about one minute to simplify your shapefile and in this way reduce the size considerably and even, in my opinion, make it look better. The effect of using a lighter shapefile (the Vietnam provinces shapefile was reduced to about 1/60 of original size) is unbelievable. Loading maps and the mouse-over effects are now a totally different experience.
