Hi Gerald You can certainly install on a "standalone server" depending how you define this ... you do need an internet connection in order to download the required packages which can take an awful lot longer than a linode if your bandwidth is not great. But other than time, the process is the same.
It is possible to make an "extras" cdrom with all the packages downloaded in advance which I have used occasionally when travelling. Unfortunately I have to reread how to do this each time I do it :-( (If anyone is curious to do this (and document the steps) I basically start with a vanilla linode install, then install the dhis2-tools. Then bundle all the extra packages together on cdrom - reading on the internet each time how to make the repository package index. Rather than linode you could use any sort of virtual machine to do this as well. Knut, given your rate of travel this would be a useful approach you might look into.)
