You migh want to try out the CVS version of dia. The autogap feature was
created to ease the drawing of digraphs.
It puts the arrowhead touching the border of the node and pointing to
its center.
You just need to attach a line/bez/arc/etc... to the center connectoin
point  of an object and see the result.
You might also like trying out the dia export of the graphviz tools. It
does not use autogap yet but produces a similar result.
