Under Windows, an OLE interface I think is the right thing -- not
something I can do, but maybe somebody more familiar with Windows.

For Unix (Gnome), Bonobo used to be the thing for embedding, but it is
apparently dead now. The IPC functionality has apparently been replaced
by DBUS, but I don't know what the new embedding system would be.
Somebody did Bonobo for Dia many versions ago, but I don't think it ever
got to quite work.
